SHILLONG, DEC 4: The state government today said it is contemplating to bring about a ‘parallel economy’ to provide alternative livelihood activities to the people affected by the ongoing ban on coal mining in the state.
“We want to create parallel economy where people will have different kind of livelihood activities,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters here on Tuesday.
Stating that economic hardship arising out of the ban on coal mining is something which will lead to difficult situations, Sangma said, “I hope in the future we can make people realise that there are other forms of livelihood and we are working towards those issues also.”
The blanket ban on coal mining in the state was imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) since April 17, 2014.
The chief minister said that nobody was ready for a ban like this as it was too sudden which have affected the economic and livelihood of the people.
Sangma further stated that prevailing situation in the state is“fallout of economic hardship and sudden loss of livelihood of the people”. He informed that the government is also moving aggressively into something like the Lakadong Mission and others as alternative livelihood for the people.
