SHILLONG, AUG 23: National People’s Party (NPP) national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma today expressed confidence that he would win the South Tura seat and continue to lead the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) in the state.
Voting in the constituency under West Garo Hills District has started from 7 am on Thursday morning and it will be closed at 5pm.
“I am sure that we would come out victorious in this particular election. Every election is tough. We have worked our best and we are very confident that the people of Tura will repose their faithin the NPP,” Conrad told reporters.
Son of late Purno K Sangma, the founder of the NPP and former Lok Sabha Speaker, Conrad who is currently the Member of Parliament from Tura is not a voter in the constituency.
The bye-election to the seat was necessitated after his younger sister Agatha K Sangma resigned as member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on July 2.
His mother Soradini K Sangma, younger sister Agatha K Sangma and wife Mehtab Chandee were among the voters who exercise their franchise in one of the polling booths in South Tura.
Asked, Conrad said, “People have realized that it is not just about an MLA but it is about electing the chief minister and therefore they are equally excited and I am sure that we will come out in flying colours.”
Stating that all the coalition partners of the MDA are supporting the NPP, the chief minister said, “I would like to thank all our coalition partners as well as all the candidates in the past elections who have sacrificed and supported me in this election.”
Meanwhile, Conrad also pointed out that though South Tura is an urban constituency but is still lacking behind in so many fronts as there are a lot of interior localities and areas which are not connected with proper roads, not having enough drinking water, lot of cleanliness issues and others.
“Therefore, my task would be towards ensuring that the overall infrastructures is improved in the town. it is a huge task but I hope that I will be able to take Tura forward and improve the basic amenities that are required in the town,” he assured.
Conrad is pitted against Congress’ Charlotte W Momin and independents John Leslee K Sangma and Chris Kabul A Sangma.
