CM confident of Congress victory

CM pixSHILLONG, FEB 28: Even as nervous candidates were anxiously waiting to know their fate few hours ahead of the counting, Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma is confident that the Congress will cross the halfway mark and will be able to form the government. He, however, left the question of who will be the next chief minister if the Congress manages to form the government to the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and the Congress high command.

Speaking to this website late Wednesday evening, Sangma said that he will leave it to the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and the Congress high command to decide as to who will become the next chief minister if the Congress form the government.

Sangma had rushed to Delhi immediately after the voting to meet Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and said the meeting was to discuss the prospect of the party in Meghalaya. He informed that after the declaration of the result of the Ampati constituency from where he is contesting, he will immediately rush to Shillong.

Sangma was confident that the Congress will cross the thirty seats mark and will be able to form the government on its own. He said, “ The Congress will be comfortably placed to form the next government.”

Meanwhile the NPP, Congress arch-rival, is also confident of forming a non-Congress government. NPP national president and former Lok Sabha speaker Purno A Sangma had told this website that he is in touch with non-Congress party, indicating the UDP, to form the next government.

Sangma and his son Conrad Sangma have been camping in the state capital immediately after the voting to cobble a non-Congress coalition government even before the results were announced.-By Our Reporter
