SHILLONG, OCT 5: National People’s Party (NPP) president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said the opposition Congress is a “sinking ship”.
Addressing a meeting held at Mawphlang for welcoming former Congress leader and MDC Lamphrang Blah and his supporters to the NPP’s fold, Sangma said that the Congress party is disintegrating throughout the country.
“He (Blah) has also realized that today the Congress even at the national level only has a temporary president even after three years they were not able to elect a leader.
If the leadership is not there who will make the party grow and that is why today Congress is disintegrating, there is no use being in a sinking ship,” he said.
The NPP chief also assured to work hard to ensure the party wins the upcoming bye election from Mawphlang constituency slated for October 30.
Stating that the NPP has grown, Sangma said there was a time when the NPP only had two MLAs in the whole country and slowly steadily within a matter of eight years the party now has MLAs in Arunachal Pradesh, has ministers in Manipur, has MLAs in Nagaland and is heading the government in Meghalaya.
“This has all become possible because people believe in the constitution of this party, people believe in the vision and the goals that this party has and the NPP has always maintained that we will fight for the rights of our people, we will always keep the interest of the people from the North East infront. We will always keep the interest of the tribal community in front and people after seeing these beliefs and constitution of our party have supported us throughout the North East,” he said.
Sangma further claimed that in a record time, the NPP has achieved something that no other political party in the whole country has achieved within such a short time which was to become a national party.
“The beauty of the NPP is this that we maybe a party that is a national party but our mindset is on the regional importance and on the regional issues of our state and of our region, that is the beauty of this party,” he said while adding “If you look at any other national party like the BSP, their political party is formed by different states in the central part of the India but the NPP is a party is formed purely by the states of the North East.”
