SHILLONG, MAY 25: Effigy of chief minister Mukul Sangma and his cabinet colleagues were burnt by those taking part in the silent procession held on Monday against the failure of the government to pass the KHAD (village administration) Bill, 2014.
Displaying the photos of chief minister, his deputy CMs – Rowel Lyngdoh and RC Laloo- District Council Affairs (DCA) Minister HDR Lyngdoh, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, Home Minister Roshan Warjri, Health Minister AL Hek, PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Forest Minister Prestone Tynsong and Chief Adviser to the Government DD Lapang, the effigies were burnt at the venue of the indefinite hunger strike launched by former KHADC CEM and KHNAM vice president Adelbert Nongrum.
Earlier, people mostly women, took part in the silent procession organized by the Youth Wing of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM).
The procession led by KHNAM president Pyndapbor Saibon started from Student’s Field to Barik point, the venue where the indefinite hunger strike is held.
However, the procession was stopped by the district authorities at Motphran when they tried to proceed towards Police Bazaar on the ground that the permission granted by the district administration was from Student’s Field – Motphran – Lumdienjri and back to Students’ Field.
KHNAM leaders however assured the district authorities that it will be just a silent procession and there will not be any law and order problem.
Convinced by their assurance, the district authorities decided to allow the procession to proceed to Barik point.
However, the procession was not allowed to pass through Police Bazaar and they were asked to proceed from Butcher Road towards Rhino point to Shillong Civil junction.
After the procession, former KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum expressed his appreciation to the people who supported his movement of indefinite hunger strike.
Stating that justice and truth is the most powerful tool of the people, Nongrum said, “I have been on an indefinite hunger strike for 9 days now, still there is no clear indication that the government is going to take this issue seriously.”
“I come here before you to pledge that I will not back down from this peaceful protest and if it is for me to die fighting this battle then I will gladly give my life away for the betterment of the future generation of the people of our state,” he said.
He said that he has no more confidence in the government led by Mukul Sangma who has so far mislead the people.
“What we want now is for the government to approve the village administration bill without anymore delay because delaying is denying and the result will only be grief,” Nongrum said while sending a clear message that the proposed ordinance of the government will never be accepted.
He also alleged that the government is trying to use its cheap agents to tell the people that the bill is full of loopholes.
“Such attempt to mislead are all false and baseless,” he said while stating that if the Indian Constitution can be amended several times, why can’t the government accept this fact that this is also applicable in the case of the village administration bill.- By Our Reporter
