Shillong, Sept 5: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma informed the assembly Wednesday that an apex level task force has been formed for a special drive against influx even as stringent mechanism will be put in place to check infiltration.
Making a statement on the first day of the three days autumn session of the Meghalaya assembly on the vexed issue of influx into the state, Sangma said the influx issue has caused concern to the government as well as to the people. He said, “The directorate of infiltration has been set-up with a more comprehensive approach along with two special committees.”
To a related question on whether there are enough safeguards against illegal migrants enrolling as voters in the state raised by UDP legislator Ardent M. Basaiamoit during question hours Sangma assured that the government was responsive to such an apprehension and danger of illegal migrants getting enrolled.
Sangma felt that traditional administrative institution such as the durbars shnongs should be fully involved in stopping influx into the state by playing a proactive role.
Several government bills and reports were placed on the floor of the house, including the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Bill, 2012, where it is mandatory for married men and women to furnish a marriage certificate for all official purposes. The report of the select committee on the Meghalaya Community Participation Bill, 2011, was also placed in the House.
Speaker Charles Pyngrope adjourned the house for the day, until it meets again tomorrow for taking up the private members business, in which pertinent issues would be raised for discussion.- By Our Reporter
