SHILLONG, JUNE 24: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday said that “lapses” on the part of the police has resulted in the failure to the arrest the cop rape accused sub inspector Nurul Islam, an officer in-charge of Ampati Police station in South Garo hills district, even as he expressed confident of his arrest soon
“There have been lapses from the side of the police in not being able to arrest him and put him as per procedure of law,” Mukul said while briefing reporters after the security commission meeting held on Monday.
While Islam was put under custody after an FIR was received on June 1, he gave the police a slip and managed to flee from the police reserve quarter in neighbouring West Garo hills district at midnight on the same day.
While action has been taken against officers who were responsible for Islam escape, Sangma said the government will do what is necessary to nab this man.
He said, necessary information about him have been relayed to concerned people and expressed “full confident” that the fugitive cop will be nabbed soon.
Asked if Islam has been dismissed from service, Sangma said, “There are provisions of law which are being followed… the important question is to get the culprit and punish him as per law.”- By Our Reporter
