SHILLONG, JAN 12: The closure of the M/S Jims Flame Gas Agency in Williamnagar two weeks ago and subsequent Gas cylinder crisis that hit consumers in the district headquarter of East Garo hills and its surrounding areas is now being attributed to the extortion demand of the Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) militant out from the gas agency.
East Garo hills deputy commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri revealed that the manager of M/S JimsGas Agency- which is the only agency to distribute gas cylinder in Williamnagar and its surrounding area- fled to Tura after it received an extortion note from the GNLA demanding Rs 25 lakhs.
Matri said, “ Two weeks ago the manager fled to Tura after receiving the extortion note from the GNLA closing the gas agency putting the LPG consumers in great hardship.
Acting on complaints lodged by the NGOs and the consumers Mantri decided to act by ordering the Extra Assistant Commissioner (Supply) to take control of the Gas Agency by force it open.
After the order was carried out by the EAC, the supply branch of East Garo Hills district distributed LPG cylinders to the consumers who had booked their quota two weeks ago.
Matri also informed that he had spoken to the authority IOCL, Guwahati who further supplied with a truck load of LPG cylinders after the required amount was deposited to IOCL, Guwahati without involving the M/S Jimes Flame office bearers.
Meanwhile, at public meeting that was with the ngos and public on Friday the EAC (Supply) Ripamchi Sangma appealed to the public to raise their voice against mindless extortion by the insurgent groups on essential service providers like gas agencies and bank officials.- By Our Reporter
