SHILLONG, AUG 9: The Pnar Students’ Union (PSU) on Tuesday demanded the state transport department to issue clarification with regards to its sudden decision to allow the operation of a weighbridge in East Jaintia Hills district without any public notice, within one week.
Addressing a news conference on Tuesday, PSU president Kyrchan Rymbai said, “The authority concerned should immediately come up with a clarification on its decision to allow operation of the weighbridge at Myndihati within one week.”
He alleged that the failure of the District Transport Officer (DTO) to issue prior notice informing that the said weighbridge will resume its operation has created a lot of confusion among the people of the district.
According to him, the union has received complaints from several truck owners and drivers about the illegal collection of money by this particular weighbridge, which has all of sudden, started its operation since August 3.
“The confusion is because that the Myndihati weighbridge earlier used to collect toll fees only from trucks carrying coal but now it has started collected toll fees, also at an exorbitant rate upto Rs 2000/Rs3000 and mostly without issuing receipts, from trucks carrying essential commodities, cement and others,” Rymbai said.
When asked, he said that the drivers informed that earlier before the closure of several weighbridges in the district by the government, the trucks used to weigh and pay the necessary toll only at a weighbridge located at 7th Mile.-By Our Reporter
