SHILLONG, DEC 4: A magisterial inquiry held the Shillong Muslim Union (SMU) officials responsible for circumcision of eleven boys from the orphanage. The orphanage is run by the SMU and the authority is likely to seek actions those officials who are responsible for the act.
The magisterial inquiry report which was submitted to the government stated that the Meherba secretary Khurshid Thabah aided by Najibur Rahman are responsible for taking the boys to the NEIGRIHMS hospital for the circumcision..
The boys were taken from Meherba for the said circumcision on October 4, 5 and 6 without obtaining either verbal or written consents from the parents of the children, it report revealed. Four out of the eleven children are Muslim by faith while the others were born Christian but converted to Muslim.
The children are from Jirang in Ri-Bhoi district and Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills and were admitted at the Meherba for education and for knowledge of the religious scriptures only.
One of the parents expressed shock after learning that their two children were circumcised without consent since the families are Catholics by faith.
East Khasi Hills district deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal informed that the report was handed over to the state government for information and necessary action. He said he would write to the police to look into the legal aspect of the case and if necessary to take punitive actions as per law against the erring officials involved in the ritual.
The report also revealed that the Meherba is yet to register itself with the State Social Welfare department.
The inquiry was instituted following the petition filed by the Seng Samla Shnong Shilliang Umkhen (SSSSU) to the circumcision carried out on the children without the consent or knowledge of the parents.- By Our Reporter
