SHILLONG, DEC 20: Church leaders belonging to different denomination of the Christian faith slammed the militant outfit HNLC for calling bandh on December 23 saying it was uncalled for and inappropriate during the festive season.
Head of the Catholic church , the biggest Christian denomination in the state, Archbishop Dominic Jala said it is not right for the militant outfit to call a bandh on the eve of Christmas. “This is not right and a bandh would defeat the Christmas celebration in a meaningful manner,” Jala said.
Jala also felt that people need time to do their shopping and prepare themselves for the special day and hence such a bandh call would impede the preparations of the Christians.
Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly administrative secretary Rev N S Phawa said “I feel they (HNLC) should not have called for a bandh at this juncture, there is always some other time.”.Even as he said that everyone is free to express their views and opinions on numerous issues in a democratic manner but the timing this time round is definitely wrong. He said, “I do not agree with (bandh call) at all.”
Echoing similar outpour against the diktat of the HNLC the Bishop of Northeast India of the Church of North India (CNI) Rev Purely Lyngdoh termed it “wrong and unacceptable” as the timing is very wrong. While saying there is nothing wrong in the intent of the bandh but he felt the same could have been programmed at an appropriate time.
In the same line, People’s Candidate Forum requested the HNLC to withdraw the bandh even as it said that it supports the HNLC in demanding the release of the ILP activists who had been arrested and jailed as political prisoners.- By Our Reporter
