Chokpot: Curfew relaxed

TURA, JUNE  1: As the situation in Chokpot in South Garo hills distict is limping back to normalcy after a bout of violence, curfew  was relaxed for 12 hours from 7 am to 7 pm on Sunday. Curfew was imposed on Thursday following mob violence over a custodial death of a suspected over ground worker of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Witson M. Sangma.

Sangma had died in police lock-up on Wednesday.

“The situation is limping back to normal. We will review it and act accordingly”, said deputy commissioner in-charge of South Garo Hills, TG Momin.

Following two custodial deaths this month, several ngos have called for a non-cooperation movement on Monday in Garo hills.

Balsan S. Marak, an undertrial prisoner died at a government hospital in Tura on May 20. The groups are demanding a CBI or a judicial inquiry into the deaths.

Reacting to the ongoing situation at Chokpot, South Garo Hills SP Lakador Syiem said, “The ngos, church forum and concerned citizens have helped us to defuse the situation.”- By Our Reporter
