SHILLONG, NOV 14: Along with the rest of the country, Children’s Day was celebrated at Raj Bhavan on Saturday. Organized by the East Khasi hills district administration under the initiative of Governor V.Shanmuganathan, 200 children and teachers from 40 different schools of the city participated in the celebration, which marks the 127th birth day of legendary freedom fighter and independent India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Interacting with the children, Governor expressed his happiness at the impressive and unique presentations made by the young participants. He called upon the children to work hard and have the courage to face challenges by inculcating and reinforcing their inner drive. The  Governor also emphasised that the young minds should carefully select their destinations in life and they should always endeavour to be productive and responsible citizens of the society as well as the country.

The celebrations were made more colourful with the cultural events presented by the artists from the Arts and Culture department and the children from Synod Higher Secondary School and St. Joseph Higher Secondary school.

Governor’s principal secretary MS Rao gave the welcome address while East Khasi Hills deputy commission PS Dkhar proposed the vote of thanks.

At U Soso Tham auditorium, the celebration was marked by skillful and colorful performances by students representing various schools from across the city. The songs and dances mesmerized the gathering of students, parents, teachers and government functionaries.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Deputy Chief  Minister Rowell Lyngdoh, expressed his happiness for being associated with the celebration of the 126th Birth Anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was considered as ‘the architect of modern India’. He urged upon the gathering to mould children when they are young, for they represent the golden future of the country.

Lyngdoh also acknowledged the giant strides made by India on various fields through the decades and hopes that the principles of tolerance, equality, freedom and brotherhood adopted by Nehru would be embraced and practiced by the young ones for peace, prosperity, and better humanity as a whole.

Earlier in the day, a series of competitions were also conducted starting with the Jawaharlal Nehru Commemoration Run which was followed by the speech, floral arrangement, painting and drawing competitions.- By Our Reporter
