SHILLONG, APR 26: An ambulance which was part of the Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma convoy hit a pedestrian killing him in Ri-Bhoi district on April 20. The accident, however, was brought to the notice of the media by the deceased sister on Saturday.
The Guwahati-bound convoy of Sangma had left Shillong at around 6 pm on April 20 and on reaching Sumer, the ambulance hit one Wanbok Syiem who was immediately brought to the Shillong Civil Hospital in critical condition by the same ambulance, Ri-Bhoi district SP CVS Reddy said.
However the victim Wanbok Syiem died the following morning and the ambulance’s driver- who incidentally shares the same name and surname like the victim- was arrested based on an FIR lodged by the victim’s sister, Reddy said.
The accident that killed the victim came to the notice of the media only after the victim’s sister and wife met the media on Saturday to highlight the plight of their plight.
Narrating the incident, E Syiem, the victim’s sister, said the ambulance that came on a very high speed hit Donbok Syiem on the roadside while he was helping his aunty shift the furniture.
After hitting the victim, the driver and a senior government doctor present in the ambulance took the victim in the same vehicle to Shillong Civil Hospital where he died the following morning. The deceased family members are yet to see the post mortem report.
While there was no ex-gratia payment made to the deceased’s family till now, the chief minister could not be contacted for his comments.- By Our Reporter
