SHILLONG, JULY 7: Meghalaya government on Thursday warned action if there is any ramification after the UCIL’s recently issued tender notice on uranium mining, which it maintained that the corporation ‘is doing at its own risk’.
“If they (UCIL) are doing it, they are doing it at their own risk,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told reporters at the sideline of a cabinet meeting on Thursday. He informed that there has been no engagement between the centre and state governments over the uranium mining issue.
There have been strong oppositions from several quarters against the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), which on July 2 floated an Expression of Interest (EOI) for carrying out developmental activities in South West Khasi hills region, which is rich in uranium deposit.
When queried, Sangma maintaining that the issue of uranium mining is sensitive and linked to law and order, which is a state subject. He said, “If there is any ramification in the form of fallout from this (UCIL action), the state government will take a call.”
In the tender notice for EOI published in newspapers, the UCIL has clearly stated – “It is planning to set up open-pitmine and processing plant of uranium ore in South West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya. The project is in the process of approval by the competent authority.”
It also invited EOIs from resourceful and competent Indian companies for undertaking construction of an open pit mine, processing plant and others for mining uranium at Mawthabah in South West Khasi Hills besides others.-By Our Reporter
