Chief minister felicitates SSLC toppers

DSC_8136SHILLONG, AUG 2: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today felicitated Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination toppers of Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) at a programme organised by University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) in Shillong in presence of Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui.Speaking at the felicitation programme, the Chief Minister said that Universities should play an important role through research and collaborate with the government.

“Our Universities should be involved at the highest level of research to assess the impact of different policies of the government. They should play a bigger role and report to the government with constructive suggestions so that the government is able to take an informed decision for the greater interest of the society,” he said.

He enlightened the gathering that Meghalaya has envisaged a mission to transform the education system. “The Education Policy conceived by the government is in final stage of completion and will be out soon. We are committed that the policy will guide us in our mission to enhance education facilities and services for the student community,” he added.

He said that government has collaborated with institutions in the State to ensure that students from Meghalaya qualify in Indian Civil Service Examination. “Lack of coaching facilities poses hindrance for our students to qualify in civil service examination. It is our responsibility that we channelise our resources in finding a way forward to empower our student for such examinations,” he said.

He lauded the initiative of USTM in creating an enabling environment for higher studies for the students of Meghalaya and the rest of North East India.

Congratulating the toppers of SSLC examination, he motivated them to strive harder in life. “In our journey, we will have to face success or failure. Our failure should not dither our spirit. We have to challenge ourselves and rise up. Failure is when we give up. Failure is a mindset,” he said, while urging the students to be prepared with all situations.

Talking at length on entrepreneurship, the Chief Minister said that the potential of the youth has to be harnessed through entrepreneurship. “We are trying to create an environment for our youth to be engaged in meaningful livelihood opportunities by promoting entrepreneurship,” he added.

Lauding the initiative of USTM for establishing Entrepreneurship Research Centre, he said that our young people can progress only through entrepreneurship and necessary facilities have to be provided to them.

Others who were present and spoke on the occasion were former Chief Minister Dr. DD Lapang, Chancellor of USTM Mahbubul Haque and Vice Chancellor USTM Prof Alaka Sarma.
