SHILLONG, FEB 3: Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil, SDB, the Archbishop Emeritus of the Guwahati Archdiocese, was on Monday appointed Apostolic Administrator sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the Jowai diocese.
The appointment, made by Pope Francis, was announced this evening in Rome, Italy. After the demise of Bishop Vincent Kympat on July 30, 2011, the Jowai diocese is yet to get a new bishop.
In order to ensure that the diocese functions appropriately, Archbishop Menamparampil was chosen as its Apostolic Administrator until the Pope appoints a new Bishop. Archbishop Menamparampil retired as Archbishop of the Guwahati Archdiocese on January 18, 2012, and since then, he has been residing at the Peace Centre, Guwahati.
According to Shillong Archdiocese vicar general John Madur Archbishop Menamparampil has taken over as the Apostolic Administrator from today. –By Our Reporter
