SHILLONG, APR 29: Hundreds of fans turnout on Monday to give a heroic reception to Rangdajied United FC who has qualified for the prestigious I-League for the next edition. The players were mobbed by the fans of this football crazy north eastern city as it might be the second team from Meghalaya to hopefully play in the I-League provided the Shillong Lajong manages to retain its spot in the coming season.
Of the eight north eastern states, Meghalaya is the only state to have not one but two teams playing in the I-League. This hill state has established itself as a football hub of the north east as club football has become both qualitative and competitive as Rangdajied United FC‘s entry into the big Indian football league clearly indicates, even though there are players from other northeastern states playing for big clubs, but Meghalaya is the only states which now has two clubs in the I-League.
Rangdajied had topped the 2nd Division I-league by defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club of Kolkata in their last encounter at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Saturday and joined the black-and-white outfit in qualifying for the next edition of the prestigious I-League.
Rangdajied did the entire state proud by producing a sterling performance in the must-win match against the Mohammedans with a 3-1 easy victory. The Kolkata team, who had already qualified for the I-League by virtue of their table-topping 17 points before Saturday’s match, finished second in the tournament as Rangdajied turned the tables on them, finishing with 19 points from ten matches.- By Our Reporter
