Centre: Stop HNLC regroup bid

Shillong, Jan 4: The Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) has asked the Meghalaya government to foil attempts by the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to regroup and rearm as the outfit poses a threat to the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

In a notification issued last month, Shambhu Singh, the MHA joint secretary in-charge of north-east India, said the state government must stop the HNLC from “regrouping, rearming itself, expanding its cadres, procuring sophisticated weapons and accelerating its anti-national activities.”

State’s new Director General of Police (DGP) Kulbir Kishan on the very first day of assuming charge also confirmed the concern raised by the MHA. “The HNLC is making an effort to regroup itself before the Meghalaya Assembly election slated for February,” he had said.

The MHA notification said the HNLC has openly declared its intention of seceding the Khasi and Jaintia inhabited areas of Meghalaya from the Indian union, and has been “employing and engaging” in armed means to achieve its objective. It also said the Khasi-Jaintia hills-based militant outfit has been indulging in acts of intimidation and extortion for collection of funds for its organization.

Singh also said the HNLC has been maintaining links with other insurgent groups of the north-east for carrying out acts of extortion and intimidation. Referring to Bangladesh, the notification said the militant outfit is maintaining camp in the neighbouring country for the purpose of sanctuary and training of its cadres. By Our Reporter
