SHILLONG, JUNE 15: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today directed the North East Frontier Railway (NEFR) to set up facilitation centre in the first railway station at Mendipathar in Garo Hills.
“Every railway stations will have the same kind of facilitation centres proposed in the entry/exit points for road network,” Sangma said after a review meeting held with the representatives of the NEFR here on Thursday.
This was in a bid to dispel the apprehension over the issue of influx of ‘outsiders’ which has affected the ongoing construction of the railway line in Ri Bhoi District’s Ronghona village.
He said the government has suggested the need to incorporate such facilities in every railway stations starting with Mendipathar.
The chief minister also claimed that the government has in fact gone beyond what the civil society organizations want.
“We have gone beyond the roads (in as far as putting mechanism to check influx) by having similar kind of facilities in every railway stations. We will again revisit how many stations are under the railway proposal,” he said.
According to him, the government even before coming up with legislative measures have already constituted the district task force and appointed labour inspectors to address the concern on illegal immigration and influx.
Asked, Sangma said such kind of violence will only delay good things from coming and appealed for good sense to prevail taking into consideration that the government’s commitment to deal with the concern has not been diluted.
“The intent of the government is not rhetoric. There time is there for everybody to revisit and correct themselves and participate in a productive manner not like uncontrolled, delinquent not willing to listen,” he said.
