Avenues to give first youth icon awards

Shillong, August 7: To mark Shillong based Finishing and Communication Skills Academy’s ten years, Avenues is preparing to host the state’s first Youth Icon Awards in September 2012 by recognizing and acknowledging the work and achievements of Meghalaya’s lesser known heroes and icons for the youth.

“The event celebrates the spirit of resilience, courage and tenacity and our awards are a genuine attempt at recognizing and acknowledging the work and achievements of Meghalaya’s lesser known heroes who have been working tirelessly in contributing to the growth of our society,” said Avenues Managing Director Mark Stone Laitflang.

The awards are to be presented to Achievers in the fields of Entrepreneurship, Social Work, Education, Visual Arts, Advocacy, Media, Citizen Journalism, Creative & Performing Arts, Tradition & Culture, Tourism, Sports and Conservation.

Basically, these awards are particularly for an individual engaged in enterprise, business, service or trade, whose ideals of leadership, innovation and service inspire, motivate, and impact youth and are catalysts for positive social change, an individual entity engaged in transformative efforts that  brings about positive social change, be it at the grassroots or through urban initiatives.

Along with the fourteen categories, is the Public Award for Youth Icon of the Year that recognises and acknowledges the life and work of an icon by virtue of simple, public opinion, which was added in response to the overwhelming requests that Avenues received.

Truly an award of the people, the Avenues Youth Icon of the Year Award is polled through a month long SMS ‘Vote’ campaign, while the name of this Public Icon will be the result of a completely democratic exercise that stirs mass conscience and encourages voters to introspect and search for answers to the all important question, “What does it really take, to be an Icon?”

An Awards Selection Committee was constituted in June 2012 to lead the nomination efforts for the Youth Icon Awards. The panel is chaired by former Minister for Home Affairs Robert G Lyngdoh, and brings together an eclectic group of celebrated personalities that includes Padmashree Patricia Mukhim, Editor Shillong Times, Dr Glenn Kharkongor, Vice Chancellor, Martin Luther Christian University, Dr A S Guha, Director IIVET IGNOU, Dr Mrs C Massar, Principal, Lady Keane College, Mr Toki Blah, President, ICARE, Mr David Laitphlang, President, Shillong Press Club and Ms Alva Sangma, Editor Achik.- By Tina Collette
