SHILLONG, JAN 28: A CBI inquiry has been demanded on the mysterious death of Patharkhmah officer-in-charge sub-inspector Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang-who police said had shot himself with his service revolver last Saturday- but an ngo alleged it might be a foul play as the officer had detained over thirty trucks carrying coal illegally to Assam.
Civil Society Women Organisation president Agnes Kharshiing shot off a letter to Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri on Wednesday demanding a CBI probe saying, “The state government must immediately institute an independent/CBI inquiry into the sudden death and frequent transfer of the deceased cop.”
The CSWO has given a month’s time for the state government to respond to its demand.
Sub-inspector Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang, posted as officer-in-charge of Patharkhmah outpost in the district had allegedly shot himself with his service revolver on January at around 9 pm, according to the police. He was found critically injured with a gunshot on his head on Saturday in his official quarters.
Marbaniang had detained over 30 trucks which carried coal illegally to Assam via Mairang-Azara road hours before his death.
Kharshiing said, “We highly suspect that he was murdered and such pressure and killing will put threat in many honest officers who are willing to uphold the laws of the land.” She also demanded that the home department provide his family members a compact disc (CD) D of all call details from his mobile, from date of his transfer to Jowai to January 24, 2015.
However Ri Bhoi district SP CVS Reddy had claimed that as per the post mortem report it appeared to be a case of suicide. Investigations into the case are on.
Marbaniang had succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital in Guwahati. His funeral service was conducted yesterday at his residence at Rynjah.- By Our Reporter
