TURA, OCT 25: Meghalaya on Tuesday paid tribute to its founding chief minister late (Capt) Williamson A. Sangma. The commemoration of 26th dead anniversary of late (Capt) Sangma began with a Rastriya Salute by the personnel of 2nd Meghalaya police battalion at William point in Hawakhana.
The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) Denang T Sangma led the dignitaries and family members of late (Capt) Sangma in paying a rich floral tribute.
In remembrance of the departed leader, the people gathered at William point and observed a minute silence.
Similarly programme to honour late (Capt) Sangma were held across Garo hills. Since last year, Meghalaya’s first chief minister’s dead anniversary has been declared as a holiday in Garo hills.
Speaking on the occasion, CEM of GHADC Denang Sangma said, “It is important for the people of Meghalaya and Garo hills in particular to remember the greatest contribution made by late Sangma for securing the future of the Garos and the tribals of Northeast”.
Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills Pravin Bakshi stated that the late chief minister’s life should be an example for the people of Garo hills to live peaceful and demonstrate unity in diversity.
A close aide of late Sangma and a former executive member of GHADC, Arbinstone M. Sangma, who was associated with the late leader during the statehood movement said, “He was a leader par excellence. He was committed for the welfare of the tribals and took up the challenge to unite all the tribals of Northeast to urge the central leadership for creation of separate states”.
He reminded the gathering how tribals of Northeast had great love and respect for Capt Sangma. “He (Captain Sangma) always wanted us to be focus on our vision and with sheer dedication make an effort to achieve it”.
A prayer ceremony was also held at Captain Sangma’s residence.-From Our Correspondent
