SHILLONG, DEC 18: Coinciding with the approaching Chirstmas festivities, the “Shillong Candle Fair”, the first such initiative of the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi), was inaugurated at the All Saints’ Cathedral Hall here on Tuesday.
Candles of different colours, sizes and designs made by 15 units from different parts of the north-eastern region are on display in the fair that concludes on December 22. The candles are all handcrafted and beautifully designed. “The timing of the fair is very appropriate,” said U. K. Sangma, the secretary of the North Eastern Council, while inaugurating the event.
Sangma said the fair could provide a good platform for entrepreneurs to market their products He appreciated the beautiful designs crafted by the participants, and encouraged them to pursue creativity in their work in order to remain ahead in the competitive market.
Speaking on the occasion, NEDFi general manager S. K. Buruah said the fair was part of the corporation’s corporate social responsibility programme. He said the fair would provide an opportunity to the people of Shillong to interact with the entrepreneurs and buy the choicest of candles for Christmas.
Notably, NEDFi had provided training on decorative candle-making to unemployed youth of the region in its endeavor to provide them sustainable means of livelihood. Experts said decorative candles have a huge market in the region, especially during the festive seasons like Christmas, Easters and Diwali.
