SHILLONG, NOV 23: The demand to call the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) for talks is starting to get louder even as the state government is yet to appoint the mediator to facilitate the dialogue offered by proscribe outfit.
In a statement issued on Sunday Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Joe Marwein said, “We demand that the state government seriously consider the offer for dialogue by immediately appointing a mediator so that the peace initiative can be pushed forward.”
Marwein said that the federation is hopeful that the peace talks will reach its logical conclusion and take the state and the people towards permanent peace and economic prosperity.
Earlier, the Khasi Students’ Union, whose former vice president Frederick Kharmawphlang joined the HNLC, also made similar demand for the government to speed up the process.
Stating after Kharmawphlang and others including a schoolteacher joined the outfit, KSU president Daniel Khyriem said, “This has strengthened our belief in the trend that more and more youth are joining the outfit.”
Khyriem said this is the reason why the state government must take cognizance of fact and act accordingly with an attitude and spirit of understanding the youth as it would its own sons.- By Our Reporter
