Addressing newsmen after a cabinet meeting held here, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said, “We have approved the DCA’s proposal to revoke the notification and also summoning of a special session of the GHADC for electing a new chief executive member (CEM) and constitution of a new executive committee.”
Sangma said the state government will accordingly recommend the decision to the Governor for his approval.
It was on April 4, the Governor of Meghalaya Banwarilal Purohit has imposed the administrator’s rule in the GHADC and the deputy commissioner of South Garo Hills District CV Darlong Diengdoh took over charge of the Council.
This was following the collapse of the National People Party (NPP) led executive committee after the former CEM Denang T Sangma resigned without facing the No-Confidence in the floor of the House on March 30.
The NPP led Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) in the GHADC was formed after the elections held on October 7, 2015.
Asked, the chief minister said the date for convening of the special session will be indicated by the Governor.
“The decision was also to give an opportunity to the elected representatives to exercise and fulfill their mandated responsibility as they will have to pass the budget,” he said.
It may also be mentioned the no-confidence was brought by the Congress led opposition as a mark of strongly opposing the sudden passing of the controversial Garo Customary Bill.
The 29-member House includes 10-NPP, 7-Congress, 4-Garo National Council (GNC), 1-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 1-National Congress Party (NCP), and 5 independents (INDs).
Reacting to a query on whether a non-NPP and non-BJP led EC is expected in the GHADC, the chief minister however refused to comment and said that will be known only after election of the new chief executive member of the GHADC.
