SHILLONG, JUNE 28: Meghalaya cabinet Friday approved setting up of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) which is in in line with the direction of the union government on the need to protect the rights’ of children.
After the cabinet meeting on Friday, chief minister Mukul Sangma said, “We have approved the setting up of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in the state which will go a long way in protecting the rights of children in the state.”
Sangma said before the approval by the cabinet the proposal was examined by many departments. He informed the MSCPCR has been approved as section 17 of the National Commission for protection of Child Rights Act, 2005 made it mandatory for the states for setting up of the state commission.
The approval by the cabinet came after innumerable reminder that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights must be set up.
Sangma said the need to set up the state commission was felt because of increasing crimes against minors.
The commission will comprise of a chairperson and six members including two women representatives.
Rules for the commission have also been approved.- By Our Reporter
