Shillong, October 3: The cabinet approved the amendment of the ‘Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order (MMPO), Assam Act 1947 adopted by the state making its enforcement more “effective”.
“We have included two more sections – 6 (b) and 6 (c) to the existing 6 (a) of the MMPO Act which was approved by the cabinet,” deputy chief minister Rowell Lyngdoh, who is in charge of law department, after the cabinet meeting on Thursday.
The MMPO act is proposed to be made more stringent by including the two sections to deal with cases of arson, burning of public and private properties during the ongoing agitations called by the ten ngos who are demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to curb inflow of illegal migrants and influx into the state during the last one month.
In addition, chief minister, Mukul Sangma however said, “The proposed amendments to the act have been brought with the objective to enable effective enforcement of the law.” He said it is felt that the MMPO needs to be given more teeth and the proposal which has been approved by the cabinet will now be examined by the different departments concerned including home and political department.”
Sangma said, “The inclusion of the additional sections (section 6 (b) and (c) is expected to increase the effectiveness of the law as well as strengthening the enforcement mechanism.” He said the amendment of the act is also in line with the compliance of the Supreme Court and High Court rulings banning bandh, strike and hartal. –By Our Reporter
