Shillong, December 4: The Bishnupur bazaar tea stall owner Bisheshwar Das succumbed to the burn injuries he had received when arsonists poured petrol and set him on fire him November 16. The NEMCARE hospital sources in Guwahati where he was admitted said the burn victim died at around 5.30 am on Wednesday.

According to the family members of Das, the body will be taken to Bihar where the last rites will be performed. As a mark of respect to the departed soul, all shops in Bishnupur market will remain close till the evening.

Das became the second victim to have died because of the attack during the ILP movement. The Meghalaya Machineries owner Vikash Nandwal was the first victim to have died after arsonists also poured petrol and set him on fire.

Fifty year old Bisheshwar Das had suffered 45 percent injuries after the attack on him in his Babua tea stall in Bishnupur.

Das was surviving with the support of a ventilator for the last few days and according to the hospital sources he died because of multi organ failure.

The East Khasi hills police had arrested four KSU members  Readyonstone Nongrum, general secretary of KSU – Lawsohtun unit, Shemphang Nongkynrih Peter Lyngkhoi and Johny Sohkhlet (26) whom the police they alleged where involved in the burning case of Das.

Speaking to this reporter on Wednesday, East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said that the case of “attempt to murder” which was registered against the four KSU members will now be converted to “murder.”

The Meghalaya government had borne the expenditure of medical treatment of Das. Meghalaya health minister AL Hek had taken the decision of shifting Das from the Woodland hospital in Shillong to the Guwahati based hospital after he a meeting with the doctors treating Das in Woodland hospital.- By Our Reporter
