SHILLONG, MAR 26: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) today revoked its order which declared Good Friday as a working day following the intervention of the state government after opposition expressed from several quarters.
The was conveyed by BSNL general manager Nirmal PG before the home minister James K Sangma and health minister AL Hek, who summoned him here on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Hek, also a BJP legislator from Pynthorumkhrah constituency, said the BSNL official had clarified that the notification on this regard was not issued by the Government of India as alleged but it was by the corporate office.
“According to the official, the notification is only for the accounts and customer service centre keeping in view that it is financial year ending,” he said.
Informing about the outcome of the meeting, Sangma however said that the BSNL has accordingly revised the order by ensuring that Good Friday will not be a working day even for the account section and customer service center.
It may be mentioned here, Good Friday which falls on March 30 was declared as a state holiday by the government of Meghalaya.
Stating that the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881 is applicable to all, the home minister said the Act clearly states any holiday declared by the state government will also be binding on all offices including of the central government.
Earlier, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) have expressed their strong reservation against the decision of the BSNL to make the important day of the Christian community as a working day.
