TURA, AUG 12: BSF on Wednesday planted around 4 lakh saplings across its border with Bangladesh and Pakistan within 30 minutes as part of its golden jubilee celebration, which will end on December 1, 2015. The premier para-military force of the country wants to better its earlier Limca Book of records last year and aims at entering the Guinness Book of record for planting samplings.
At Tura in West Garo hills, the plantation was carried out at its headquarters in Dobasipara and supervised by DIG SHQ, BSF, Tura, Aseem Vyas. “The target this year was to plant over 4 lakh saplings all across the nation within 30 minutes thus, establishing a new record”, BSF release said.
Last year the BSF planted over 309,000 saplings in 30 minutes. “This plantation programme would also mark India’s Independence Day,” an official said.
Planters’ Association president Dr. P C Roy Chakravarty, Nokma (village head) and secretary of Dobakkol and other dignitaries and locals were present during the plantation programme, which began at 10 am.
All units and sector headquarters in Garo hills took part in the plantation. Concerned over global warming there was a banner saying, “My Earth, My Duty”.
“Since 2013, more than one and a half crore trees have been planted in the area of BSF’s command and also along India’s border with Bangladesh and Pakistan,” a BSF official said. He informed that the plantation programme brought together border guards and people of different religions and customs living along the borders. –From Our Correspondent
