TURA, JULY 25: Overloaded truck (ML 08 D 2886) carrying cement on Saturday got stuck at a weak wooden bridge at Baghmara in South Garo Hills disrupting road communication.
The truck was on its way to Rongara about 35 km from Baghmara. The incident took place around 5:30 am. The bridge falls along the National Highway – 62 located a few meters away from the lone petrol pump at Baghmara.
The Garo Students Union (GSU) Southern Zone blamed the national highway division of Baghmara for the incident. “The truck stuck over the bridge has caused great inconvenience to the public, which has put a halt on road communication system”, said Chingsrang Marak, publicity secretary of GSU Southern Zone.
The union has blamed the PWD (roads) department for failing to fulfill their demand on improving the road connectivity in South Garo Hills district. “The concern department has received severe condemnation from various organisations but they remained unmoved and unaware of the sorry state of affairs in the district”, Marak added.
Taking a dig at the poor maintenance of road in the district, the GSU said that the weak wooden bridge in the South Garo Hills region along NH-51 and 62 is posing a serious challenge on the people, who have to take this route.
Marak also informed that all along the NH-51 and 62 in South Garo Hills, there are many stretches which needs urgent repair. “We condemn the sick and ill-fated performance of National Highway division of Baghmara”, the GSU added.-From Our Correspondent
