Boundary dispute entity

SHILLONG, JULY 29: Meghalaya government on Wednesday decided to constitute an entity of all political parties and said it will also proposed to the Assam government to consider carrying out similar exercise by forming such entity to facilitate arriving at a solution to end the age-old boundary dispute between the two neighbouring states.

The decision to form the ‘entity’ was taken at an all political party meeting convened by chief minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday, after the political parties agreed that the documentation prepared by the government is backed by strong evidences.

“The agreement took place today and all the political parties agreed on the suggestion to form an entity, which will engage with Assam government as we have been able to evolve a mechanism (with the involvement of all political parties) and Assam should also do the same,” Sangma told newsmen after the meeting.

The proposed entity will be having representatives from all political parties in the state including Independent legislators, which have no party affiliation, Sangma informed.

Sangma said, “We will be immediately writing to the political parties to indicate the names of those people whom they would send in the entity to represent their respective political parties and the name of entity will also be in sync with the purpose and objective.”

According to Sangma, the whole exercise of forming the entity as well as proposal to the Assam government will start rolling before the Independence Day celebrations.

Stating the entity will explore measures for political dialogue and use all its diplomatic skills at political levels, Sangma said, “We would also tell them (Assam) that if you are not willing to take a decision on this thorny issue alone as a party, involve other political parties and let all the political parties come together to resolve the border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.”- By Our Reporter
