Border agitation on the anvil

SHILLONG, MAR 25: The Raliang Circle of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF-RC) decided to launch a series of protests for the nonchalant attitude of the state government on issues that are affecting the people living along the Meghalaya and Assam border.

The decision was taken after the HNYF-RC visited Mukhroh village in Jaintia hills bordering Assam on March 23 last.

HNYF-RC president Donbok Dkhar told said on Monday, “We have decided to launch a series of protests and agitations against the inability of the state government to look into the grievances faced by the people living along the borders with Assam.”

Dkhar said during the visit to Mukroh village, the organization held a public meeting along with the local authority against the atrocities committed by the Assam police and the forest rangers of Assam towards the local villagers residing in these areas.

Dkhar said, “The areas continues to suffer various forms harassments committed by Assam officials such as illegal collection of money in the name of taxes, physical abuse against farmers and even women and children.”

Dkhar further informed that apart from atrocities by Assam officials, the people are also facing problem from the activities of the Assam based militant outfits.

Quoting the villages of the area, Dkhar said, “The local people are even taxed for collection of firewood from Meghalaya forest besides farmers are not only taxed but also extorted and robbed of their belongings by both Assam based militants and authorities of Assam government.”

Saying that the state government has fail to redress the repeated atrocities committed against the border residents, Dkhar said, “The government has even neglect the areas and has not undertaken development work as there are no proper road connectivity into many interior areas of the region.”

To add more woes, the areas suffers from lack of health facilities, wherein there are huge building but till date are not functioning and remain empty which greatly affected and making the lives of people living in this part of the state miserable, he added.

Dkhar warned that the organization along with the local durbars or the areas will chalk out plan of actions which will be announced shortly.- By Our Reporter
