SHILLONG, JAN 17: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) Northern Region today demanded the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) to set up SSLC examination centre at Mawhati area in Ri Bhoi District.
“We have demanded the board to consider setting up a centre in Mawhati area for students appearing the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination,” HYNF-NR president Marcus Marten told reporters on Wednesday.
Informing that a memorandum on this regard was also submitted to the board’s examination controller during a meeting today, Marten said that the board had assured to consider the proposal next year.
“This is due to the fact that the SSLC examination is nearing and preparation for the same is almost completing,” he added.
Asked, Marten informed that at present, students from different villages of Mawhati area would have to travel a distance of 70 to 80 kilometers to reach their respective examination centres at Umsning, Nongpoh and Byrnihat.
“This has been a big problem which sometimes led the students to discontinue their studies,” he said.
On the other hand, Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong Mawhati Area president M Jyrwa said that this was the second time that they had to approach the board for setting up of the board’s examination centre in the area.
“Earlier, the reason for not considering the proposal was due to the fact there was no police station nearby but now with the intervention of the sitting MLA (Julius Dorphang), the police station was recently inaugurated at Umsohlait,” he said.
According to him, there are only five government aided secondary schools in the area having around 200 students who are eligible to appear for the SSLC examination.
