SHILLONG, JULY 2: With the victory of Congress candidate Bluebell R Sangma in the recently concluded Chokpot bye-elections, the number of women legislators in the Meghalaya state legislative assembly has gone up to five in a sixty-member house.
Interestingly all the five women legislators are from the ruling Congress party. Beside Bluebell other women legislators are home minister Roshan Warjri, social welfare minister Deborah Marak, Urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and legislator Dikkanch D Shira.
The newly elected Sangma will be sworn in on Friday at the state legislative assembly. Assembly speaker AT Mondal will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the first time legislator who was elected during the Chokpot bye-elections.
Mondal told reporters that the swearing in ceremony of the newly elected lady legislator will take place at 11.30 am at the State Legislative Assembly building.
Sangma, who is the widow of a late NCP legislator Masonsngh Sangma, , won the coveted seat by a margin of 2,550 votes in the just concluded bye-elections.
Bluebell secured a total of 8,042 votes followed by National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Phillipole Marak securing 5,492 while GNC’s Kalpana Marak stood a distant third with 5,009 votes as independent candidate Thinkerwin Marak secured a credible 1,189 votes.
