SHILLONG, OCT 17: The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced its list of candidates for the upcoming bye-elections in the two district councils – KHADC and JHADC slated on December 13.
For the first time the BJP will be contesting the election to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). In the past, the party had representatives in the JHADC during 2004 and presently in the GHADC.
The BJP said the role of the party will definitely have an overwhelming effect on the empowerment and transformation of the autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the state.
Announcing its decision to contest the bye-polls, BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh said that the party has decided to declare the candidates for six vacant seats in the KHADC, while the single seat in JHADC will also be done shortly.
The candidates are Hurbert Marbaniang from Laban-Mawprem constituencies, Mamiry Nongkhlaw – Nongkrem, Kyntiewborlang Syiemlieh – Nongspung-Sohiong, Councellor Singh Wahlang – Nongkhlaw-Mairang, Thandarsing Warjri – Pariong-Mawthadraishan and Denestar Parion – Rambrai-Jyrngam.
Expressing confidence that the party will come out victorous, Lyngdoh said, “We have done our enrollment in the different districts and looking at the number of applications it indicates that we are ready to fight… therefore we are confident that we will come out with flying colours.”
He informed that bye-election is not a rehearsal ground for the 2018 state elections but it is to safeguard the interest and welfare of the ADCs in the state.
Expressing the party disinterest for any pre-poll alliance, Lyngdoh said, “We will be fighting on our own as there will be no alliance with other political parties.”-By Our Reporter
