SHILLONG, MAR 27: BJP leader AL Hek on Friday said that defections by ticket hopefuls in Assam would not stop his party from returning to power after the Assembly elections.
“Every election you will see lots of Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram — that will keep on happening,” Hek told reporters, using the local idiom for party-switching.
“We cannot satisfy all the leaders, or the leaders satisfy the political party. It’s not happening only in BJP. There are so many also from Congress and other parties joining the BJP.”
Asked whether BJP would suffer after some denied tickets joined Congress or ran as independents, Hek said the churn cuts both ways.
“During election time you will see lots of Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram taking place in politics,” he said.
“That cannot be avoided.”
He stressed it was a feature of all parties, not just BJP, NPP, Congress or UDP.
On seat projections, Hek declined to give a number.
“I cannot say how many seats the BJP is winning, but the BJP government will continue in Assam,” he said.
He noted party karyakartas and leaders were working “very hard to get absolute majority,” but added “even if they do not reach the majority, still the BJP will be ruling in the state.”
