BJP waiting for centre’s decision to pull out of MDA

SHILLONG, NOV 18: BJP state president Ernest Mawrie on Friday reiterated that the state party is waiting for the central leadership to take a call on whether to pull out of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.

Mawrie told reporters that NPP is part of the BJP-led NDA government at the centre and chairman of the NDA is the prime minister Narendra Modi.

“So we are waiting for their call. They will decide and they will give us the necessary instruction,” he said when responding to a query if the BJP is considering pulling out of the MDA government following the arrest of its vice president, who was released on bail recently.

Earlier in his statement issued on November 16, Mawrie had said that Bernard Marak was released from police custody against all odds and despite the best efforts of the NPP government to keep him under lockup.

“The case against him has no basis or proof, and that it is a matter of despicable political vendetta,” he had said while challenging the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to fight only from South Tura seat instead of fighting from two seats and face the might of the party’s vice president Bernard N Marak in 2023.

When asked, Mawrie said, “The matter is subjudice but you have seen they have allowed him to come out of jail on bail by clearly stating that there is no evidence against him.”

Stating that Bernard is the only aspiring candidate from South Tura, he however said the party will do its job and will declare tickets as per survey report as done for everybody.

Meanwhile, Mawrie said the people of the state want a change.

“They want a good government to focus on development and they don’t have any alternative other than the BJP.”
