BJP to contest Shillong 2014 LS seat

BJP flag SHILLONG, MAY 5: Undeterred by its failure to win a single seat in the last Meghalaya assembly election held in February, the BJP will be fielding its candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in the general election to be held next year.

In the 2008 Meghalaya assembly elections, the BJP had managed to clinch only one seat that of Pynthorumkhrah constituency represented by AL Hek. However just before the 1013 assembly election Hek resigned from the party and joined the Congress.

The BJP score was blank when the 2013 Meghalaya assembly election result was declared. The BJP at one time had three legislators in the 60-member Meghalaya legislative assembly. However it went down to two seats, then one and in the 2013 assembly drew a blank.

But the BJP state unit general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty informed reporters that the party is definitely going to contest next year Lok Sabha assembly by fielding its candidate for the Shillong seat. The Shillong Lok Sabha seat is now represented by Congress MP Vincent Pala.

Chakraborty said on Sunday, “We are definitely going to the contest from Shillong seat.

When queried about the Tura Lok Sabha seat, Chakraborty said the National People’s Party (NPP)  is now an ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of which the BJP is the main constituent and therefore the arrangement for the Tura seat will have to be discussed at the central level. At present NCP MP Agatha Sangma, youngest daughter of PA Sangma who is the NPP president, is representing the Tura Lok Sabha seat. She is however likely to join her father’s party soon.-By Our Reporter
