SHILLONG, JUNE 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Meghalaya State has sought investigation and action against groups which are involved in spreading false rumours to disturb the communal harmony.

“We will meet the Director General of Police (DGP) to demand investigation of all these groups which are working to defame the party,” BJP general secretary Bashailang Khongwir told reporters here on Saturday.

The BJP has taken strong cognizance on the alleged attempts by vested interest groups to destroy the party’s image by misusing the social media, the lastest victim of which according to the party was its GHADC MDC Sofior Rahman.

Rahman, who is also BJP state minority president, was charged of posting in facebook hate comments directed towards the Garo community in two separate FIRs filed by Garo residents recently.

Informing that the MDC has lodged an FIR in this regard, Khongwir said that the BJP as a party is also filing a separate complaint with the DGP and the Sadar Police Station.

“We are want that investigation to this should be done under the Information Technology (IT) Act as well as Indian Penal Code (IPC),” he said adding “We are demanding investigation and action from the police and guilty be caught.”

Khongwir said that a fake facebook account has been created on his (Rahman) name where a communal sensitive post has been put in form, which has created a controversy and disturbs the communal harmony.

“It is a case of impersonation, a case of stolen identity with common intension. It is with a purpose to deliberately disrupt social harmony,” he added.

According to him, the false post on social media, which is motivated and malicious, are deliberately being put by vested interest opposed to the BJP as an agenda of Sabka Saath aur Sabka Vikas to defame the party.

Referring to the fact that there is hardly any crack on cyber crime in the state, the BJP general secretary said the party has full faith in the state police but if they fail, the Centre’s intervention will accordingly be sought.

The party would also demand security for the MDC in view that he has received threats from several quarters after the fake post went viral.

Asked, BJP spokesman Basu Chakraborty alleged this could be the handiwork of opposition group, who have planted their own people in the BJP.

“This is from the fact that these people planted in the party are now going back to a particular party which is the Congress,” he said.

On the other hand, Rahman, an MDC from Balachanda informed that he only came to know about the fake post when the party vice president rang him up, which accordingly he filed a complaint with SP of West Garo Hills district.

“I was shocked to know that someone had opened a fake account on my name as I have never posted anything on social media. This is a politically motivated attempt by some vested interest which is out of jealousy,” he said while informing that the police are already in the process of investigating into the matter.
