BJP Meghalaya urges Centre to hold talks with HNLC

 “I as the leader of the legislative party along with the state party president will be writing to the Prime Minister through the Union home minister besides the BJP national president within this week requesting their intervention into the matter,” Hek told reporters.

The minister said that the decision was taken at a party meeting convened by him last week to discuss the statement issued by the HNLC recently.

Asked, Hek said, “After seeing the positive response of the HNLC, we have unanimously decided in our meeting to speed up the process of talking with the Centre on the need to bring peace in the state.”

Stating that the proposed letters are in the drafting stage, he said that information regarding the steps taken by the previous government and the letters submitted by the then home minister of the state (Roshan Warjri) have also been collected.

The BJP leader further informed that he had also personally met and discussed the issue with the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, at his official residence last night.

“I told the CM that the MDA government should welcome the HNLC’s peace offer. He has assured to take up the matter seriously and to work together with the Centre,” he said.

Earlier, the HNLC had welcomed the stand of the BJP and its minister to give peace a chance and termed the move as a door of opportunity to build bridges with the government of India.

“The HNLC appreciates the stand taken by the BJP state unit under the leadership of AL Hek to give peace a chance. After decades of fake promises from politicians, we are now pleased to know that AL Hek has taken full responsibility to carry forward the peace initiatives with the Prime minister  and Union Home minister including the other leaders of the NDA government,” the outfit’s general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw had stated in a statement last week.
