SHILLONG, MAY 22: BJP Mahila Morcha national chief Vijaya Rahatkar today said the fear of the law is not present in the state as she lambasted the ruling Congress for its alleged failure to protect women and children from heinous crimes.
“Where is the security for women? Sexual assaults are on the rise in the state. Where is the state government and why has it turn a blind eye (till now),” Rahatkar said while addressing at a meeting of state Mahila Morcha held here.
She also expressed concerned over the increasing cases of rape against minors which the state has been witnessing from January till today.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rahatkar said, “The fear of the law is not present and this is one of the reasons that criminals keep on perpetrating such crimes.”
According to her, the state government needs to pull up its socks by ensuring the police organization is strengthened and capable of handling and dealing with such cases.
Also demanding the immediate setting up of a special court to fast track POCSO cases in the state, Rahatkar said the absence of such court has led to pending of as many as 400 cases (POCSO) before the district and session courts in the state.
The national president also accused the present state government of failing to properly implement the compensation scheme for victims of such crimes, which according to her, is not being given to many of the victims.
Admitting that the Congress government which has at least five women legislators has failed to take care of the welfare of women, Rahatkar said that the BJP if voted to power will ensure respect, dignity and security to women is given.
Earlier in her address at the meeting, she had also protested against the government for its failure to provide proper water and electricity supply to its citizens.
According to national president, it is high time that the people pave way for good governace, which will ensure all things will fall into place.
Asked on the issue related to cow vigilantism, Rahatkar however said that the matter is for the state to decide and her party is not going to interfere with the sentiments of the people.
