SHILLONG, JAN 7: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Meghalaya State has sought security cover of all its offices throughout the state following the petrol bomb attack on its headquarters yesterday night.
“We have requested the home department to deploy security personnel in all (party) offices throughout the state to prevent any untoward incidents in near future,” BJP legislative party leader and cabinet minister AL Hek said on Monday.
Strongly condemning the act of arson on the party’s state headquarters at Bivar Road, Hek said the party while lodging an FIR with the police, copies of which have been sent to the chief minister Conrad K Sangma and home minister James K Sangma have urged to take stern action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
“The party also requested the police to ensure that the culprits should not be allowed to go scot free,” he said.
Meanwhile, the state police are still investigating to nab the culprits behind the petrol bomb attack.
Speaking to reporters here, East Khasi Hills District police chief Davis NR Marak said an FIR is being filed by the BJP officials today and preliminary inquiry into the incident is going on.
He however said once the FIR is received, formal investigation will immediately start.
The attack also came one day ahead of the North East bandh sponsored by the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) as a mark of protest against the BJP-led NDA government’s move to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
Asked, the SP said police will also see the CCTV footages from the BJP office and surrounding areas for identifying the miscreants behind this mischief.
He said at least three bottles were recovered from the spot and it is assumes that two – three people were involved in the incident.
