Bill: Barely mentions influx

SHILLONG, NOV 1: The Synjuk Ki Seng Samla Shnong (SSSS) general secretary Vanshan S. Buhphang said that the draft Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants Bill hardly mentioned about influx and illegal immigration. He said when influx and illegal immigration  are the general concern but the proposed bill did not enlightened much on these two issues. “Why should this bill be in place in Scheduled Areas as the district council is already in place?” Buhphang questioned.

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will be bringing in the Khasi Hills Village Administration bill, which is similar to the draft bill of the government.

Buhphang, nonetheless, asked the government to ensure that the bill does not come into conflict with traditional and customary practises of the people. Informed, Conscious and Responsible Existence (ICARE) president Toki Blah said the preamble to the draft bill was “confusing” as no mention has been made on influx and illegal immigration.

The preamble to the bill reads thus: “To provide a framework for regulation of landlords and compulsory verification of the tenants so as to enhance the security of the citizens of the state and to prevent breach of peace and maintenance of public order.” –By Our Reporter
