Shillong, Oct 29: Concerned over continued traffic violations, the state traffic police has come up with a new way of tackling the menace of “illegal parking” by using a device to clamp down on vehicles that violates traffic rules in and around Shillong city, especially in the commercial areas.
“The clamping device will be put into immediate effect from Tuesday,” said East Khasi hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) M Kharkhrang at a news conference Monday.
Kharkhrang said, “Vehicles parked in a “no parking zone” will be clamp and would be fixed with a sticker (notice) on their wind shield upon which the owner has to go the respective police stations to pay the fines before the clamp is unlock.”
Kharkhrang informed that the clamp device will be made operational first in Laitumkhrah and Sadar PS on a trial basis with immediate effect and later will be implemented by the different traffic branches.
According to Kharkhrang in addition to the exercises already in place, the implementation of the device is a new way of tackling illegal parking of vehicles as this is one of the root causes for “unnecessary” traffic jams leading to public inconveniences.
Around 12, 457 cases of traffic violations were detected in the period from January 2012 – September 2012 upon which a total amount of Rs 54, 60, 650, 00 as compounding amount has been realized, Kharkhrang informed.
Earlier, the traffic police have also put several mechanisms in place such as towing of vehicles and imposing fines on traffic violators. However, the clamping device will now be introduce following several complaints from public on the towing exercise citing that this practice had to some extent damaged their vehicles when they were being towed.
Kharkhrang, however, informed that the towing of vehicles will continue if they are found to have violated traffic rules and regulations. He appealed to concerned citizens and road users to cooperate with the police in this regard for the benefit of everyone.-By Our Reporter
