Baghmara, Dec 5: The three day cultural bonanza called “Drum Festival”- a part of Tyisam Fest’ 2012- got off to a flying start Wednesday in Baghmara, South Garo Hills district headquarter with hundreds of people flocking to be part of the inaugural function at Simsang Golden Beach.
Organised by the district administration in collaboration with the Art & Culture department the festival will features the 350 Drum Beats performed by the troupes from Shillong Art & Culture department combining the drums of both Garo and Khasi and creating a new rhythmic tune. The added attractions were the Wangala performers from Rongara, Baghmara, Ruga and Siju.
The three day programme has enticing events like night safari, a cruise, water sports, beach football, beach volleyball, dimchrang flute recital, gonda cheraa, serejing and other indegneous games lined up.
For those whose taste buds are always looking for exotic food, local delicacies of the region will also be showcased. If you love fashion, music then you will not be disappointed as there is fancy dress competition, fashion show and rock show featuring the Ultimate Page and other local bands.
Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said such an event will promote tourism sector saying that “Meghalaya in general and South Garo Hills in particular has a huge potential for tourism sector.” He said and by organising such a colourful cultural bonanza the region’s rich cultural heritage and tradition can be showcased.
Sangma also informed that to develop tourism in the district various schemes has been initiated by the government and said that the sanction for the purchased of motorboats to be used from Baghmara to Siju has already been approved.-By Our Reporter
