SHILLONG, FEB 21: Border Security Force (BSF) on Thursday apprehended five persons which include four Bangladeshi nationals along with 300 kg of beef from the Indo-Bangla border in West Jaintia Hills District.
While showing extra vigil to prevent any infiltration on the international border, the BSF observed some suspicious movement and intercepted one vehicle (Tata Spacio ML-04- A- 7542) at Muktapur.
On searching the vehicle, the BSF troops apprehended 5 persons which include 4 Bangladeshi nationals and 1 Indian along with 300 kg of beef worth Rs 90,000.
The Bangladeshi nationals have been identified as Noor Islam (45), Abdul Kalam (18), Shwel Ahmed (26), and Kamal Miya (38) while Samiwell Lyngdoh (49) is a resident of Muktapur.
Bangladeshi Taka 6025 was also recovered from their possession.
“It was revealed before BSF that four BD smugglers had come to meet Indian smugglers for the deal of cattle consignment for smuggling,” BSF officials said in a statement issued here.
“After getting the cattle they found that all cattle were not in condition to be smuggled through the rough and rugged terrain due to being injured.
Hence they slaughtered few of the cattle and were transporting beef in one Tata Spacio to smuggle it to Bangladesh,” they said.
According to the officials, this has been the first case of such type detected by BSF where beef was being smuggled to Bangladesh by the desperate smugglers.
The apprehended persons along with seized items handed over to concern department for further legal action.
Meanwhile, BSF has stepped up its special drive against the smugglers and has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent nefarious design of trans-border criminal to maintain tranquility in bordering areas of Meghalaya state.
