SHILLONG, JUNE 17: The state government on Friday assured to take up with the centre the recent eviction notices served to over 700 Khasi families residing in neighbouring Bangladesh. “I have advice the Chief Secretary KS Kropha to take up the matter with the Government of India,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told reporters at the sideline of the single window agency meeting on Friday.
The Bangladesh Dhaka District Administration had issued an eviction notice to over 700 families belong to indigenous Khasi tribe residing at Nahar Punji of Srimangal Upazila in Moulvibazar for over 75 Years. The Khasi settlers were asked to leave the village within June 12.
Opposing the quit notice, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on the matter.
Stating that the incident was also communicated to him earlier, Sangma maintained that as the issue is bilateral, the mandate therefore lies with the union government.
Stating that the relationships between the two countries have improved through bilateral boundary agreement, he said, “There is always a mechanism to resolve such issue at the bilateral level.”
He said it is appropriate for the Government of India to take advantage of such platform to resolve the quit notice issue.-By Our Reporter
