Shillong, December 10: The twelve hours bandh in Khasi, Jaintia and Ri-Bhoi districts on Tuesday passed off peacefully without any incident being reported from any parts even as the state and central government offices, financial institutions and business establishment remained closed.
East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said, “No incident has been reported so far from any parts of the district, the bandh is peaceful.”
The 5 am to 5 pm bandh on Tuesday called by the pro-ILP ngos resulted in complete shutdown even as attendance in government offices in East Khasi hills has been put at 20 percent. The state secretariat was empty as the employees did not report for work except for the high government officials.The percentages of office attendance in the six districts were as follows: East Khasi hills 20 ,Ri Bhoi 5, West Jaintia hills 52, East Jaintia hills 40, West Khasi hills 15 and South West Khasi hills 42 percent.
West Jaintia hills district, deputy commissioner Peter Dkhar informed that the attendance in government offices were fifty-two percent. He said, “The bandh was peaceful as no untoward incident has been reported from any part of the district.” He said that small shops remained open but bigger business establishment were all closed.
The streets in the city wore an empty look as most of the vehicles were off the road except for few government and police vehicles. Some of the empty city streets were converted into playground by children as they indulged in different games.– By Our Reporter
